A byte is not a bit
1 MB = 1,000,000 B and 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B. The byte is the common baseline for expressing the same capacity in either unit system.
A byte contains eight bits. This tool converts byte-based capacity units; it does not interpret bit units or rates such as Mbps.
With bytes as the input, both results keep the same capacity. 1,048,576 bytes is 1 MiB in the binary result (1,024-based; some apps label this “1 MB”), or 1.048576 decimal MB in the decimal result (1,000-based). See the standard unit reference.
Decimal input is allowed for mathematical capacities. A fractional byte result is labelled explicitly; an actual file byte count is a whole number.
Reverse conversion
Reverse either result using its exact value. The direction shown on each action follows the current conversion.
Standards and sources
Standard decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000: kB, MB, GB and TB. IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024: KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB. Results and formulas use these standard symbols.
The input controls keep familiar KB, MB, GB and TB labels. In the binary result (1,024-based), an unmarked input such as “MB” is read as MiB; some apps display a GiB result as “GB”. That compatibility explanation applies to this result only. In the decimal result (1,000-based), KB is an interface alias for standard kB (1,000 bytes); the unit factors do not change.
“The SI prefixes refer strictly to powers of 10. They should not be used to indicate powers of 2.”
