Byte Converter
Convert bytes, KB, MB, GB and more in one calculator.
Binary result (1,024-based)
1 GiB
1,024 MiB = 1 GiB
“MB” here means MiB. Apps may label GiB “GB”.
Decimal result (1,000-based)
1.024 GB
1,024 MB = 1.024 GB

Ten standard units, one byte baseline
This converter supports B, kB (accepted as KB), MB, GB, TB, PB, KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB across SI decimal and IEC binary units. PB has a decimal result only. Decimal input can include a fraction, for example 1.5 MiB to MB; input is limited to 512 characters and a complete conversion URL to 2,048 characters. The standard factors below apply to explicit-unit conversions and examples too.
Familiar input labels produce a binary result (1,024-based) first and a decimal result (1,000-based) alongside it. Results use the standard unit symbols MiB/GiB and MB/GB, respectively.
| Unit | Name | Standard | Exact bytes |
|---|---|---|---|
| B | byte | Base unit | 1 |
| kB | kilobyte (input alias: KB) | SI decimal | 1,000 |
| MB | megabyte | SI decimal | 1,000,000 |
| GB | gigabyte | SI decimal | 1,000,000,000 |
| TB | terabyte | SI decimal | 1,000,000,000,000 |
| PB | petabyte | SI decimal | 1,000,000,000,000,000 |
| KiB | kibibyte | IEC binary | 1,024 |
| MiB | mebibyte | IEC binary | 1,048,576 |
| GiB | gibibyte | IEC binary | 1,073,741,824 |
| TiB | tebibyte | IEC binary | 1,099,511,627,776 |
How the conversion works
target = input × bytes_per_source ÷ bytes_per_target
First convert to bytes, then divide by the target unit’s exact byte factor. This also works across standards, where a simple ÷1000 or ÷1024 shortcut would give the wrong result.
Example: 1 GiB = 1.073741824 GB. Both represent 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Convert gigabytes to terabytes
1 TB = 1000 GB. Use the same tool to convert a decimal capacity into terabytes.
Standards and sources
Standard decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000: kB, MB, GB and TB. IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024: KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB. Results and formulas use these standard symbols.
The input controls keep familiar KB, MB, GB and TB labels. In the binary result (1,024-based), an unmarked input such as “MB” is read as MiB; some apps display a GiB result as “GB”. That compatibility explanation applies to this result only. In the decimal result (1,000-based), KB is an interface alias for standard kB (1,000 bytes); the unit factors do not change.
“The SI prefixes refer strictly to powers of 10. They should not be used to indicate powers of 2.”
