About MB to GB

A browser-based reference for decimal and binary storage units.

What the converter does

MB to GB is a browser-based converter and reference for byte-based storage units. It calculates with exact byte factors and shows binary (1,024-based) and decimal (1,000-based) results. It does not determine which definition another app or device uses; check the source unit when comparing capacities.

The input decimal text is converted to an exact rational byte amount using integer unit factors. Displayed values use at most 12 significant digits with half-up rounding; Calculation details retain the exact result, including fractional bytes.

How we use unit standards

The converter uses SI decimal prefixes and IEC binary prefixes, with familiar unmarked input labels explained where they appear. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by NIST or IEC.

Standards and sources

Standard decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000: kB, MB, GB and TB. IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024: KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB. Results and formulas use these standard symbols.

The input controls keep familiar KB, MB, GB and TB labels. In the binary result (1,024-based), an unmarked input such as “MB” is read as MiB; some apps display a GiB result as “GB”. That compatibility explanation applies to this result only. In the decimal result (1,000-based), KB is an interface alias for standard kB (1,000 bytes); the unit factors do not change.

“The SI prefixes refer strictly to powers of 10. They should not be used to indicate powers of 2.”
